Parametric Benches

Inspired by the rock outcroppings in central park. They are an abstraction from nature in the industrialized world. The edges are brazed with brass and the surfaces have a patina applied to them creating a stark contrast between dark and light value. Together the brass and steel have an angelic effect - the dark steel seemingly floats on the golden brass.

Rough freehand sketches with a few organic/linear ideas. Not sure about the final form at this point.

I wanted to use steel and brass in the bench because it was going to be put outside on display for three months.

So I started brazing then sandblasting to start to see what kind of effect they created together.

Determined the form would not be stable enough- additionally the slope of the surface that meets the body is too steep.

From here I went back to small scale forms to hone in on a more reliable seating surface- then back to full scale with the final materials.
